Promenade #16: Montmartre: Saint Denis and Other Legends

Bonjour Tout le Monde!
May 18, 2016
Today I did the walk in Montmartre, which I was very excited to do because I knew that it included the Sacré-Coeur. The walk started at the Place des Abbesses and we made our way over to the Sacré-Coeur. After a quick stop for shopping we took the Funiculaire, a tram of sorts, up to the base of the beautiful Basilica.

The Sacré-Coeur

The Sacré-Coeur was built after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. The French had many  hardships and failures in this war. Alexandre Legentil and Hubert Rohault de Fleury vowed to build a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart “as reparation” for they held that the misfortunes of France had spiritual rather than political causes. We paid six euros to go get a panoramic view from the top of the Basilica, and it was so beautiful up there.

After we stopped at the little église Saint-Pierre, one of the hundreds of little churches that are found inside Paris.

We then walked through many cute roads in the Montmartre area with adorable houses. We walked past a little vineyard and went to a small park with the Statue of Saint-Denis.

We stopped at a little square called the Place Emile Goudeau and then continued on the walk.
We walked down the rue Lepic and saw the place where Van Gogh lived.

At the very end of our walk we saw the infamous Moulin Rouge. Overall, this walk was filled with many different cute streets and adorable little houses. I loved being able to see the view of paris from the top of the Basilica. It was a very nice walk but I would have enjoyed it quite a bit more if it wasn’t pouring rain at the end.
